The Murder of Norman the cat by actor Joseph Petcka

The Murder of Norman the cat by actor Joseph Petcka has come to my attention for the first time tonight. I'm sitting here on the evening of September 19, 2008 absolutely shocked and enraged. I don't know if the rest of the world already knows about this tragedy and I'm the only one to just discover it or not. Regardless, I have to write something for my own sanity and for any of you who are not aware of this horrendous crime and subsequent court trial.

Apparently, a person by the name of Joseph Petcka deliberately and violently killed his girlfriend's cat, Norman, on March 27, 2007 in New York. The case has only now come to trial and Petcka is claiming "self-defense".

I've included a link to GlossLip.com so you can read the entire story and also find a link there to a New York Post jounalist's opinion of the case. If you cry easily or your blood boils over animal cruelty ....well, this story is difficult to read.

To sum it up, Mr. Petcka was jealous of the attention his girlfriend gave to her cat, Norman. He also was upset that Norman would have nothing to do with him. Norman hissed when he came near and ran away in fright according to his owner.

On the witness stand, Norman's owner revealed other abusive incidents toward Norman prior to his death. Finally, one night, Petcka "threatened to put Norman in the microwave and nuke him, insisting the cat had bit him on the hand." His girlfriend, Norman's owner, told the court that she left their apartment, thinking that Petcka would cool down.

She came back the next morning to find "cat food, fur and feces everywhere," and Norman’s cold body in his “special spot,” - the space under her bedside night stand where he hid when scared.

Now, 18 months later, the case has finally gone to trial. Petcka has admitted to kicking Norman to death "in self-defense".

This is as painful to write as it was to read. I don't know whom to be most angry with: Petcka obviously, but also the girlfriend, Norman's only protector in this world, who left Norman in the apartment after her drunk, ranting and raving boyfriend threatened to "nuke" Norman in the microwave.

And then, there's this New York Post journalist who has written the most disgusting, hateful, stupid article claiming that the trial is "eating up precious court time and tax dollars in downtown Manhattan." She goes on to say that Norman "is no innocent wittle victim. THE stupid cat had it coming. He deserved every blow."

There's a lot more to her article ...but you have to read it yourself to believe it. It's beyond description. The journalist and Petchka would make a great couple if that gives you an idea of what you're about to read.

I keep hoping I'm going to find out this whole thing is a joke, although where would the humor be?

I hope you'll read it and learn something from it. It's sometimes good for us to be reminded how violent some people can be toward animals when a thought like that never enters our own minds.

Norman was an 8-year-old, handsome, long-haired, orange tabby and unfortunately was timid and fearful. Why did he deserve this?

I welcome your comments. I feel it's our responsibility to speak up in support of our precious pets when others are doing and saying such vile things about them.
