Bad Breath in Cats

by a reader

QUESTION

My cat has very smelly breath and he only eats small amounts of food. Is he ok?

ANSWER

He most likely is not ok. Bad breath and decreased appetite are suspicious for (1)bad teeth. (2) Diabetic cats also have different smelling breath. Cats with (3)kidney disease will have foul breath as well. Any of these scenarios requires an immediate visit to the vet. Please make an appointment right away.

Best to you and your kitty,

Dr. Neely

bad breath kitty
by: Suzanne

My cat had very bad kitty breath for a few years. I didn't even feed him wet food. Turns out he had 3 infected teeth that had to be pulled. Now his breath is perfect. He also has diabetes, which may have helped the teeth along, but taking them out was the best thing for him and his breath.

That's great! So glad to hear he's doing better!
