Cat Defecating in Plant

Please help me. My very affectionate cat keeps pooping in my plant. Why?

ANSWER:

The reason your cat defecates in your plant could be behavioral or physical. If the plant is real and is planted in dirt, cats can have a tendency to be attracted to the soil because they may think it is a proper place to use as a litter box. Many people put aluminum foil over the soil for this reason.

However, cats can also defecate inappropriately secondary to many different conditions, including worms or diseases. I have to recommend that you make an appointment with the veterinarian to make sure your kitty's health is fine before assuming it is a behavioral problem. Be sure and take a stool sample with you to the vet when you go.

Thank you for writing,
Dr. Neely
