Cat injury: Cat limping with swelling in leg

Hi. I woke to find my cat limping with a swollen leg. My cat doesn’t go out during the night nor does he sleep in with me. Could it be a bad landing? Please help.

Cats land and jump on all sorts of things, and always seem to land on their feet, but can certainly miss or fall. Your cat may be suffering from a cat injury, such as a dislocated joint, torn ligament, broken bone, or a sprain. The possibilities are not all that different from the various injuries that we can experience as humans.

The way your question was worded suggests that your cat does go outside. If this is the case, it is also important to point out that the cat limping and swelling in the leg could be the result of a cat fight or fight with another animal while your cat was outdoors. A bite wound, in particular, has the potential to form an abscess and become severely infected. Without examining your cat, I'm not sure whether the swelling you are seeing could actually be an abscess, and depending on where it is on your cat's leg, it could be causing cat limping symptoms.

Ultimately, there is no way for me to diagnose or treat your cat’s injury over the internet. I would suggest that you bring your cat to the vet for a thorough exam to make sure that nothing serious has happened to his leg, and to treat him accordingly if it has!

All the best,
Dr. Neely
