Cat litter and food bowl

by Lindsey
(Georgia )

I just got my first pet: a beautiful kitten! The laundry room is big enough for her and she's just starting to eat on her own and use the litter box. I just don't know if I should keep them next to each other or in separate areas!? Help! I want my kitten happy!

Dear Lindsey,

Congratulations on adopting your new kitten! Thank you for writing in with your questions.

Generally, cats don't like to eat and drink near where they relieve themselves. While keeping the litter box and cat food and water bowls near one another is wise, especially while she is so young, it would be best to separate them from each other as much as possible while still keeping them easily accessible and easy for your kitten to find.

All the best,
Dr. Neely
