Cat Tail injury!
by Bonnie
(San Diego)
QUESTION: My cat's tail, at the very end, was caught in a swinging door and the fur was ripped all the way to the cartilege. The tail is not broken! I put some antiseptic on it, but do not know what else to do for her. Is there anything a vet can do or is it something that will have to heal on its own?
ANSWER:
Your cat's tail should be looked at immediately by a veterinarian. I'm not sure how you know it is not broken - it could be.
Your kitty is also at risk for infection which can become serious.
The injured tail is certainly in need of examination and clipping, scrubbing, and possible stitching. Antibiotics will probably also be prescribed as well as cat pain relief medication.
It is impossible for me to say definitely what is or isn't needed without examining your cat, but I definitely urge you to take her to the veterinarian right away.
