Cat with open wound near anus

QUESTION

My 16 yo male cat has a wound about half an inc in diameter lateral and a little lower than his anus. I just noticed it yesterday night. He is 100% an indorr cat so he hasn't been running around outdoors or around other cats/animals. He has been acting normal, eating, and does not get agitated when I go in close to examine it. There is no active bleeding, no funny odor, and the exposed tissue is nice and pink/rosy. About a week ago, he was acting funny- not eating, playing, just sleeping all the time. I didnt notice any physical signs then. That episode resolved a few days ago, but the two incidents could be related. I am taking him to the vet later this afternoon, but I just wanted to get an idea of what it was.

Hi,

Sounds like an anal sac abscess formed and ruptured. It was probably forming when he wasn't feeling well and once it ruptured he began feeling better again. A vet visit is in order and having his anal sacs checked regularly in the future would be a good idea.

Thank you,
Dr. Neely

Anal Glands (open wound left /right of anus)
by: Cathy

My cat has it at least 7 times. At first I thought the other cat was attacking her. Eventually after keeping the cats seperate, I realised that it was self inflicted. When the anal glands got infected (or impacted) it would cause an abcess on the whever side was infectedand she would bite the infected area open to allow the mucous(pus) to drain. Now I have her anal glands checked every 4 or 5 months to ensure that the opening does not clog up or grow together and cause another abcess. After 4 years of problems I seem to have it sorted out.
The next option is to have the anal glands removed but the operation might leave her incontinent and the last thing I need is to be cleaning up her mess all the time. I now only feed her anti hairball dry food because it is high in bulk and the bulk helps to push against the anal glands and facilitate when defaecating.
From the time she started having problems she became obsessive in licking her tummy, especially in the folds of her skin and under her tail. This eventually caused a fungus or bacterial infection in the area. I am now trying baby wipes(no alcohol)twice a day and having more success than antibiotics and creams.

my cat has the same thing I think?
by:

she an indoor cat
i was gone for a week I went on vacation for 10 days and I came home and 2 days later I noticed this round ,pink open are around her anus.

my boyfriend forgot to fill the water bowl back up because it is really big and he didnt even think to check it and he gave them the nasty cat food that I have as a reserve for just incase days , if I run out of cat food in the middle of the night or something.

so, on that note I think she may have been eating poorly and ran out of water?

she is a 100% indoor cat. I think she does have anxiety. She may have been worried that I wasnt coming back home?

It sounds like the same thing and it has nothing to do with not having water or missing you. She needs to be seen by a vet. Thank you, Dr. Neely
