MY CAT DIED
It's been a month since Willow died suddenly of heart disease. It's taken this long to even be able to write his name or speak it. He was by my side every day for 12 years, even resting his paw on my wrist when I typed. He was pure love, both giving and receiving insatiably. After a month, I still walk toward his favorite place, expecting to see him. Then I cry.
A very dear client brought her kitty in for euthanasia today. There was no question that it had to be done. I watched her pain and felt my own pain over her cat and once again over my own lost friend.
Those who aren't animal lovers don't even begin to understand how we can feel this deeply about an animal. At times like this, I don't know who has it best - those who have loved and lost or those who have never loved a cat.
My cat died. Three rather meaningless words or extremely important and painful words depending on who is saying them or listening to them.
BLOG ENTRY March 19, 2009
A friend and very devoted cat lover wrote to me this morning asking for the post above. She wanted to share it with someone else who is hurting.
I went to all my blog entries to find it and as soon as I read the first words and saw Willow's pictures again, I started crying.
It's now been a little over 4 months since Willow died. His ashes sit beside my computer in the corner where he used to sit. I'm crying even harder now as I say those words.
The memories, the sorrow, the tears don't ever stop. I still shed tears over a best cat friend of mine that died 20 years ago. However, it becomes more bearable. My experience has been that the only that helps is time. During that time, one must shed tears, remember, allow themselves to be sad, allow the grieving to happen. If people around you don't understand, find others who do for those times when you need to share and you need comfort.
I have two elderly patients who I have been caring for for many years. They are both near the end of their lives. Their owners are wonderful. They all feel like part of my family. The time is drawing near, perhaps even day, when they will need to pass on. I will cry. I will cry for the owners and for the cats and in memory of my own cats and losses and the hurt will be raw, fresh all over again. However, it will pass and I'll go on with my work and children and other cats. Until the next time. Oh, don't we wish those times didn't have to come.

Would You Like To Share The Memory of Your Beloved Cat?
Your cat’s death can be devastating. Personally and through my clients' losses, I have experienced this too many times. We often find comfort by writing a tribute to our cat. It allows us to honor our kitty and also share our pain. The internet has made this easier to create and more far-reaching than we ever could have imagined. We can now share our feelings with fellow cat lovers all around the world. You can create a page about your deceased kitty right here. Upload pictures, write a story, share memories, write your favorite poem or quote. It can be as short or as long as you wish.
