Cat's Anus Is Red

by Michelle

Hi,

My cat Sadie is two years old. She is eating and drinking the same amount, sleeping the same amount.

The problem is her private area---anus. It is so red, and she keeps licking the area. It does have stool stuck on it too. Her stool looks just fine. Not a problem so I dont understand what is going on down there.

I hope you can help.

Thank you,

Michelle

Hi, Michelle,

Anytime stool is stuck on a cat's rear end, the skin is going to get irritated and inflammed and therefore red.

This happens often in medium or long-haired cats. It can, however, happen to any cat.

If a cat's stool is a bit on the soft side, this can happen. If there's too much hair ingested into her system, the hair can actually hold two or more pieces of stool together preventing all the stool from ending up in the litter box.

Anal sacs can be a problem in cats and she could be irritated if her anal sacs are impacted and she is licking excessively because of it.

Whatever the reason, the area must be kept clean by wiping it for her with a soft cloth moistened with warm water as needed. It is also safe to put human antibiotic ointment on the area after cleaning such as the type you get in the pharmacy for your own skin wounds (neosporin, etc).

If cleaning and applying ointment for a few days doesn't solve the problem, her rear end should be checked by a vet.

Thank you for writing,
Dr. Neely

My cats bum is red
by: Anonymous

Hi

I've noticed over the past few days that my female cat has a red bum. She's been dewormed, wanders outside, eats healthy and drinks healthy, and her stools are also fine. I can't pinpoint what is wrong with her. She regularly licks her bottom too. Any ideas?

I would suggest that you bring your kitty to a veterinarian for an exam to diagnose the cause of her symptoms. If you would like to provide more information about your cat's symptoms, please submit your questions as a new thread in the Cat Forum so we can reserve this area for comments directly related to the original poster's concerns. However, it sounds like your kitty should be seen by a veterinarian for a check-up.

All the best,
Dr. Neely

Ointment
by: Anonymous

I just got a kitty yesterday and i noticed her butt was protruding also its red and she's licking it a lot. She lived outside all her life and they fed her dog food. I am thinking her previous diet was the cause of this but I'm not sure. If I put the ointment on her will it hurt her if she licks it???

If you're referring to an antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin, then no, it will not hurt her if she licks it. Once she gets the taste of it, she is also unlikely to lick much.

Also, there can be numerous causes of her problem and it would certainly be best for her to be seen by a veterinarian.

Apparently, he wants to do his pooping, etc. outside. If this is OK with you, then let him go, all puns intended. :) I have 7 cats, and several of them, even with deep snow on the ground, want to go outside. This means we humans have to clear a path with little kitty cul-de-sacs where they can potty. So far, even with freezing temps, they are happy with this.

Some cats will never accept the litter box, and that's fine. Just like some people don't like to eat liver or wear hot pink tights or listen to Daft Punk. It's all an individual preference, and cats are individuals, too.

Cats anus bright redish purple
by: Anonymous

Hi i have three cats. One of my cats is obese weighing 18 ilbs and is a gray tabby. For the past month off and on his anus has been bright redish purple. Since he is obese he cant get to clean himself properly! he sits upright and licks and licks but im not sure if hes getting the whole area. Could this be the reason for the breight red. My friend says maybe its worms but i check the litter and i havent seen anything near or in the litter to think its worms. Hes eating fine and sleeping and drinking and playing fine. my other two cats are slim and dont have this problem.I dont know what to do because he is very skiddish when it comes to me trying to clean his bottom. Hes tried biting me and my huband and i really dont have the money right now to take him to the Vet. What can you suggest?

I'm afraid my only 2 suggestions are ones you've already made to yourself. (1) see a vet (2) first try cleaning the kitty's rear daily and even put a bit of human skin antibiotic cream (Neomycin for example)on the area. It is probably due to his being overweight and not being able to clean his rear.

Cats Red Anus
by: Chuck

You keep saying "She".

Does the same thing apply to male cats as well?

Seems like it would.

Yes, absolutely. I was only saying "she" because I was responding to a pet owner who was asking about her female cat.

could my cat be constipated
by: janet

Hi my tom cat is 2 years old and have been a littled concerned about his anal area too. My cat never uses his litter tray but I did find a worm on his anus i wormed him two weeks ago, i was stroking him i noticed that his anal arae had feaces sticking out, he also has been grooming his that area quit alot. I tried everything to keep him in the house but when I do he doesnt go and the last time was nearly two days he wouldnt go in the litter tray. I have tried many types of different litters even mud from garden. He lasted two day in the house with out going to the litter tray straight away when I open the door he went to toilet.
do you think I should try a little harder next time what could I give him if he is constipated?

It doesn't sound like he has a constipation problem as much as he has a behavioral problem in that he only wants to defecate outdoors. When he is kept indoors, he holds it in on purpose. Of course that can lead to constipation. But the real problem is getting him to use the litter pan inside on a regular basis.

You can find a tube of hairball lubricant under various names like Petromalt in the pet store and use that for constipation if his stools are indeed too hard and he needs softening of the stool. It sounds like you need to continue trying different types of litter boxes and litter and locations of the litter boxes and praise and other positive reinforcement when he uses the litter box. Good luck, Dr. Neely
