Cats eye problems

by Worried Mom

I have noticed today that my cat has this skin coming from the inner corner of both eyes. What is this? Why is it there? And what could this mean? It's the bank holiday and I am worried.

Dear Worried Cat Mom,

The skin you are seeing in the corner of your cat's eyes is actually a third eyelid, known as the nictitating membrane. It is not commonly seen unless the cat is not feeling well.

The best thing to do would be to bring your cat to a veterinarian for an examination. If your cat is eating and drinking and the eyes are otherwise okay, an emergency visit is not necessary, but arranging an appointment within the next day or two would be advisable.

Best wishes,
Dr. Neely
