Diabetic Cat Uriniated when Picked Up
by Jessica
(Connectocut)
Hello,
My 10 year old cat Dopey was diagnosed with Diabetes in March of this year. He recently had his "OK see you in 6 months" vet appointment and has been doing well. He still urinates and drinks more than normal, but the vet said his glucose levels were ok. This morning he seemed a little off. Didn't eat all of his food, a little tired. I picked him up to snuggle and he urinated a steady stream. I took him to his litter and he just looked at it. I didn't squeeze him or anything unusual. Should I be concerned? As it is Sunday on a holiday weekend, I am not sure if I should call this in as an emergency.
That is absolutely an emergency. He sounds as if he has low glucose and that can lead to seizures and even death.
Also, get a new veterinarian. Any vet who tells a diabetic cat owner "ok see you in 6 months" is engaging in malpractice. UNLESS you are testing your cat's blood at home, which you ABSOLUTELY SHOULD BE DOING! Please see my article regarding Cat Diabetes.
