drooling

by Stacy
(Kokomo, In)

QUESTION:

My female cat is drooling profusely and she had her tongue sticking out, what is wrong, the vet could not give me answer, can you. He did say that she had a fever.

Hi, Stacy,

That is certainly not normal and the answer to those symptoms can usually be found with a thorough exam of the inside of the mouth and chin and tongue.

She could have bad teeth, gum disease, a toxic reaction to a plant or something else she ate or licked.

She could have cancer of her tongue or jawbone.

She could have kidney failure and have ulcers on her tongue and in her esophagus.

She could have congestive heart failure or other disease that causes fluid build-up in or around the lungs.

All of these things are readily diagnosed either through a complete physical or sometimes with the addition of x-rays and possible bloodwork. Did your vet do or suggest any of that? If not, you should get a second opinion.

Good luck. When I get an email like this, I'm just dying to reach my hands and eyes through the computer screen to examine your kitty. Do you have a "cats-only" practice within driving distance? If so, I would recommend you seek a second opinion there if you need one.

Sincerely,
Dr. Neely
