FRONTLINE CAT

Appropriately named, the use of Frontline long ago convinced me to make my own cat a Frontline cat as well as the cats belonging to my clients. I want to share with you the case that was most convincing. I spent my first year of practice as a feline vet making house calls for cats. One client that I visited that first year had 12 to 20 cats living in her home, depending on changing circumstances. When she first called requesting a house call for her cats, she said the reason was that many of her cats had lost fur and had bald patches all over their bodies. She reported they were constantly scratching at their skin and seemed quite miserable.

As soon as I entered the house, I was greeted by a number of cats and the sight of them literally made me gasp and become very saddened. I had seen many cases of flea bite dermatitis before, but never had I seen such devastating skin disease and on so many cats at once. Large amounts of hair missing and bleeding scratches all over their bodies made it obvious these cats were miserable.

Therefore, I explained to her all the non-chemical efforts she could make and warned that it would be unlikely she would get rid of all the fleas. We went over bathing the cats, combing them regularly with a flea comb, frequent vacuuming an I applied Frontline to each cat and advised her to do so every month year-round. I dispensed antibiotics and steroids for those with the worst skin and left feeling sad, frustrated, and skeptical.

Although I made other house calls to tend to her cats over the next months, I'll skip ahead to a year later when I was called out to give all the cats their annual exams. I was shocked. Pleasantly so. Every single cat had beautiful skin and full, shiny haircoats. I couldn't find a flea on anyone. It was a moment in my career I will never forget.
