Gagging Kitty

STRONG

My 12 year female cat started acting strangely today. I normally feed her wet food in the morning and evening. This morning she ate all of her food quickly so I gave a her a small amount of dry food to get her through the day. When I came home, I noticed she was occasionally gagging and rubbing her paws on her face/jaw line. Upon feeding her in the evening, she is obviously hungry but when she takes a bite she begins gagging and rubbing. I even noticed her gagging and rubbing after she was bathing herself. I am planning on taking her to the vet tomorrow but just wondered if you have any ideas of what may be the issue?

Hi,

Dentals problems or something stuck in her mouth or throat would be most likely. It's also possible an insect bit or stung her. Please let me know what you found out.

Good luck, Thank you,

Dr. Neely

Gagging while purring only
by: Inchino

First of all, thanks for these postings. I have read most of them and really appreciate what you are doing.

My cat is 13 years old. He sits/sleeps on blankets we put around the house and seems happy. When he comes to sit on our laps he purrs A LOT and then starts to almost gag. Once he has settled and stops purring this gagging stops.

Could the purring be related to the gagging? Any ideas?

Right now he settled on my lap and after he stopped purring the gagging stopped entirely.

If he is otherwise healthy, it sounds like his salivary glands overreact when he is happy and purring and the excess secretions cause him to gag. I have seen this several times.

The other possibility is the gagging is triggered somehow anatomically by his "purr mechanism". Again, if he is otherwise healthy, it is probably not of concern.

My cat is currently having similar problems. Could you please let me know what the diagnosis was? Thank you.
