My 1 year old Bombay Cat is vomiting daily while she's in heat

Our 1 year old Bombay cat has been vomiting daily while she has been in heat. She still eats and uses the litter box the same and has the same energy. We have changed her cat food recently to Blue Buffalo Indoor Formula. My question: Is my cat vomiting something that can happen when female cats are in heat?

Thank You,
The Mabrys

Dear Sandra,

Cat vomiting is not a common symptom of cats in heat. If this behavior is new or has increased in frequency, regardless of her heat cycle, a trip to the veterinarian would be advised. While the cause is likely the recent change in your cat’s diet, frequent vomiting carries a risk that your cat may become dehydrated or lose weight, and mean that your cat is sick.

Cats vomiting can also be an indicator of many different cat health problems, from cat hairballs to feline illnesses such as parasites, irritable bowel, feline hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, liver disease, constipation, poisoning or ingestion of a toxic substance and many other conditions. The various causes of feline vomiting are almost too numerous to count.

For more information on vomiting in cats, please see my page Is Cat Vomiting Worrying You? In the meantime, though, I would recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam for your kitty.

Best wishes,
Dr. Neely
