My cat has a hole in her back

by Katie
(England)

My cat has a hole in her back and puss is leaking from it. I am worried because all she does is lay down and does not get up to eat or drink because she can barely walk. Please help me! It is Saturday night and no where is open on a Sunday, and I need some advice to help her so she survives for Monday to take her to the vet.

Dear Katie,

Please take your cat to an emergency veterinarian right away! There are emergency veterinary hospitals that are open at night and on weekends, and it sounds like your cat should not wait until Monday to be examined. If you do a search online for emergency veterinary clinics, hospitals, and veterinarians in your area, you are very likely to find someone.

If you absolutely cannot find an emergency facility to bring her to immediately, the only things I can recommend are to keep the wound clean, keep her cool, and try to encourage her to eat or drink anything you can get her interested in. However, your cat's condition sounds very serious, and the best way to help her is to have her examined by a veterinarian as soon as you possibly can.

Best wishes,
Dr. Neely
