Newborn Kittens Not Nursing

Our Himalayan had 3 strong, appearing to be healthy, kittens this morning, however I'm concerned that they are not nursing very much. One in particular wiggles around but never latches on. Mom was more than interested at first but seems to have lost interest. The babies seem to be well and content - just not nursing very much.

Please see my page on Newborn Kitten Care for ways to determine if the kittens are eating enough. Ultimately, if you feel that the kittens are not eating enough, they should be seen by a veterinarian right away. Due to their age and size, your kittens' lives are very delicate, and malnutrition and dehydration can be fatal.

Best wishes,
Dr. Neely
