Pregnant cat

Candi when I first got her

Candi when I first got her

I have 2 cats, one is about 5 years old (Candi) and she's fixed. The other one is younger (Diva) and pregnant. When we got the Diva it took Candi quite a while to warm up to her, even now they still fight sometimes. I'm wondering if I should be concerned that once the kittens are born Candi might attack them or something and if so is there anything I can do to prevent this?
Thanks.

Dilettee

Dear Dilettee:

There are never any guarantees about anything, but the few times I have heard of another cat hurting new kittens is when the other cat is a male.

More likely, Candi may want to do too much "mothering" to the new kittens. I have known many female cats that even took over nursing some of another female's kittens.

Of course, the thing to do would be to keep them separated when Diva is giving birth and anytime in the day or two after that when you are not home until you are certain how Candi is going to act.

Enjoy the new kittens. I'd love for you to send pictures. Thank you for the picture of Candi. She was (and I'm sure IS) a real cutie!

Sincerely,
Dr. Neely

Pregnant cat and other house cats
by: Olivia

I have three cats and they all get along really well (one fixed male, the mother of him who i have had for years and a newish female who is newly pregnant).
She isnt very far along but i am scared that the male might hurt the kittens or the other female might try and steal them when they are born ect.

Should i try and keep the kittens and female seperate from the other cats good once they are born?
Or could i introduce them slowly when they are mor allert??

Thanks

Keep them separate for the first few days and then gradually introduce them, but only under your supervision until you see how all are going to interact.
