Pregnant Cat Symptoms
Pregnant cat symptoms is a topic that generates a surprising number of questions to the veterinarian. In response to the many questions I receive about pregnant cat symptoms and birth of kittens, I have written this section of the website to cover this aspect of cat health and behavior.
Most kitties, except those in catteries, tend to care for themselves during pregnancy, have their kittens and care for them, and barely ever look to humans for any help whatsoever. In fact, if we intervene, a cat's labor can even be halted temporarily by our presence.
For that reason, I tell nervous cat owners to make a soft, comfortable "bed" in a quiet, dark place for the expectant cat. However, I quickly add that you should not be surprised if she doesn't use it. Cats like to go off alone, on their own, to have their kittens.
If your cat is giving birth and you can't resist the urge to peek, stay as far away as you can and be very, very quiet. Keep the lights off and keep the area as dark as possible.
Taking care of kittens is another thing most cats do perfectly well by themselves. Care of newborn kittens is an instinctual process that most new mommies are very good at doing.
At the bottom of the page are questions from readers with my answers. There are also other pages listed about pregnancy in cats. I am also working on a complete kitten section which will be ready soon and will help you greatly with your questions about care of kittens.
One quick word about the nutrition of pregnant cats. These moms have extra requirements while they are pregnant and while they are nursing. In addition to feeding a high quality food and feeding as much of it as the mommy kitty wants, I strongly recommend a multi-vitamin as well. Click here on

You will find questions and answers from readers at the bottom of the page. This will give you lots of additional information about the subject of cats giving birth.
If you have a cat that goes outdoors and therefore gets fleas, gets pregnant, gets in fights, and all the other things that can come with being outside, please read my page on OUTDOOR ENCLOSURES.
