Protein in a Cat's Urine

QUESTION:

My cat, Mr. PJ has high levels of protein in his urine. He did have urine crystals taken out of him. Every month or so I have to take his urine to be tested. He also has kidney bacteria. So what do I do for him? One vet say this and another says something different to me. Could you help me? Rhonda

Dear Rhonda,

I would be very happy to try and help you, but I need more information. I need to know how old he is, what his entire medical history is, and what do you mean about having crystals taken out? Was he obstructed and had a catheter passed? Or did he have stones and have them surgically removed from his bladder? How do you know his kidneys have bacteria? How are you collecting the urine? What does one vet say that is different from the other? Anything and everything you can tell me about him and his previous and current conditions will help me give you a better answer.

Thank you, I hope I hear back from you, Dr. Neely
