Swollen cheek

by Alissa Rios

QUESTION About A Cat's Swollen Cheek

My adult cat has a swollen right cheek. He has
had it for 2 days and it seems to be getting worse. If I touch the swelling on my cat's face, it seems to be soft, like liquid, and it does not bother him. What is it and do I need to take my cat to the veterinarian?

ANSWER to Cat Swollen Cheek Question

You absolutely need to take your cat to the veterinarian right away. The most likely cause of a soft swelling on your cat's face is a cat abscess.

The two most common causes of feline abscesses on the face are:

(1) an abscess due to feline dental disease that is occurring secondary to an infected tooth or

(2) a feline abscess occurring secondary to external trauma to your cat's face, most likely trauma from a bite wound from another cat or other animal.

If a cat's teeth haven't been checked regularly and cleaned as necessary, it is very possible for a kitty to develop feline dental disease.

A cat's teeth are just like our own in the sense that they eat food, need to brush their cat teeth (and most owners still do not do that), need regular feline dental cleanings by the veterinarian, and need kitty dental check-ups at least once yearly, more often if they have prior cat dental disease or are older.

If this is not done, a cat's teeth can develop a large build-up of plaque and they can develop feline gingivitis. A tooth root abscess can also result.

If the problem is not the result of cat dental disease, the other possibility is a bite from another cat or other animal. Feline abscesses often develop secondary to bite wounds. A cat's abscess can take several days to a week or more to develop to the point that you notice it.

In either case, or if it is something else less common, your cat needs to be checked by a veterinarian right away.

Kindest Regards,

Dr. Neely

Cat with Two Swollen Cheeks
by: Anonomous

About a week ago my cat's cheek became swollen and then popped and has now scabbed over. Today I noticed that her other cheek has now become swollen. Could she have been bitten by something twice or is this a sign of a tooth infection?

While it may seem like quite a coincidence, either is a possibility. Please bring your cat to a veterinarian to have her examined and to have a look at your cat's mouth for signs of infection.

my cat's cheek
by: Anonymous

There's a homeless cat that I have been feeding for the last 5 months or so because he was coming to my back yard. So, like 4 days ago, I noticed his left cheek was swollen. It just popped this morning but he is too hyper to help him clean the affected area. Well, I did what I could, so I cleaned it and I put some fresh and natural aloe vera from my plant because I know it is a natural antibiotic resource. So, I would like to know if the aloe vera is going to help him get better? I would like to take him to a vet, but they are very expensive and I have no money right now.

Swollen Cheek

My cat has had a swollen cheek for a day now. We are having trouble rounding him up for the vet. How long can he go without medical attention and if it pops will he be ok?

PS thanks for all your hard work

Your kitty should be seen by a veterinarian right away. If the swelling is an abscess, it needs attention as soon as possible.

In the future, please submit your questions as a new thread in our Cat Forum so the comments section can be used for those responding directly to one another or to the original poster's story.

Both my cats cheeks are swollen
by: Brandon

My cat was outside and when we let her in today her cheeks were swollen, there are no wounds on her face or anything, i dont know if it is an allergic reaction or what, please help.

Impossible to know if this is allergic or infectious or traumatic, etc. Should be seen by a vet right away!

swollen cheek

My cat had the same thing happen with his cheek swollen and then it poped. The only thing is the skin on his face came off and it is just flesh. Is there anything I can do to help him? We have been keeping it clean and giving him meds. It just looks bad and i can't take him to the vet.

Ideally, you would take him to the vet. If you absolutely can't, keep it clean and it should heal on its own. What meds are you giving if you haven't been to the vet?

Cat with swollen cheek popped
by: Alicia

There is a stray cat roaming around our neighbor for the past couple of months and he comes to our house sometimes. I noticed a few days ago his cheek was very large and swollen. He didn't come around for a few days but just saw him and it's seems to have popped and there is dried blood. I'm not sure if I should still take him to the vet or just let him be. Even though he's not our I'm willing to do whatever possible for him

Certainly sounds like an abscess that ruptured and usually after the rupture, the cat returns to normal. Of course, there are many other reasons to take the cat to the vet. Felv/FIV test, vaccines, fleas, worms, exam, ....just to name a few.

swollen cheek with sneezing?
by: Anonymous

Hello,
My cat's cheek has been swollen for 2 days, and she's been sneezing for about a week. She is one of 4 semi-feral barn cats that live outdoors, and it seems there has been a bit of a cold traveling among them. Do you think the swelling in the cheek is related to the 'cold'? FYI, we had them all spayed about a year ago, and they were given shots then too.

Most often, that is a bite wound that has abscessed or a tooth root abcsess.

HELP
by: Lizi

MY cats face has been swollen for about two days too, from i think a bee sting. He just came in today with his nictating membrane, and it wont retract. Would his eye be taken out? His face is a bit hard, his eye is very firm, and the third eyelid seems to be inflated and its pink. I dont have money to take him to the vet, what should i do? :(

It is impossible to give advice on this without seeing him. You can read the other answers because the questions are very similar to yours, but ideally your kitty needs a vet right away.

My cats cheek is 3 times the size it shuld be wat should i do?

ANSWER: The condition sounds very similar to the previous question. A swollen check is most likely to be an abscess, either externally from a bite, or internally from a bad tooth. One should see the vet if it has not ruptured on its own and it will be lanced and/or antibiotics prescribed.

swollen cheek gone
by: Anonymous

My cats cheek busted. It was filled with blood. I washed it out with peroxide and put neosporin on it. He seems to be doing ok. He is still eating and trying to go outside. Thank you for the advise.

From Dr. N. You are very welcome. Certainly appears to have been an abscess. I'm sure there was pus mixed in with the blood. Cleaning it with peroxide and putting neosporin on it is an excellent thing to do. Just keep in mind that there was a reason it developed and that reason could be a bad tooth. It can abscess again.

Also, abscesses in general can empty and appear to heal and then in a few days or even a week or so can start to swell again. If that happens, I would suggest you go to the vet to see if a tooth is responsible and also to get oral antibiotics in an effort to keep it from coming back again.

Thank you for letting me know the outcome. Write anytime! Dr. Neely
