Weeping Eye With a swollen lid

by Debi
(Maryland)

Question

This morning when I went to give my cat food, I noticed that her eyelid was swollen and that her eye is leaking liquid. What should I do?

Hi, Debi,

Take her immediately to the vet. Eye problems in cats can become serious and obviously eyes are so important. You cannot know, without a vet visit, whether she has a corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, uveitis, or one of many possible eye diseases.

There is almost never a case involving an eye problem in a cat that doesn't need some type of treatment. Also, the longer it goes undiagnosed and untreated, the more serious the condition can become, even leading to blindness in some cases.

Good luck and thanks for writing. Dr. Neely
