Worried about my poor cat's eyes

by Marielouise
(Scotland)

2 days ago I noticed that my 9 month old cat's eye lids were red and his eyes weeping. I went to our local pet shops and got a solution to clean the eye, but it does not seem to make any difference. His pupils are dilated and weeping also his lids look red and puffy. What do u think it should be? I am going to call the vets tomorrow to see what they think it could be as well.

Felix is a house cat and has never been out. I watched a kitten for a week and they did not fight or scratch each other..... I am scared that he is going blind or has a bad infection. What do you think it could be?

Thanks.

Dear Marielouise,

There are many possible causes for the symptoms you described. The redness and puffiness could certainly be an infection such as conjunctivitis. The larger concern, however, is the fact that your kitty's pupils are dilated.

Dilated pupils can be a sign of high blood pressure or glaucoma, even in a young cat, and can cause blindness if left untreated. If you haven't done so already, I would urge you to make an appointment with a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Best wishes,
Dr. Neely
