Cat collar

Can you use a ribbon as a cat collar?

Dear Rose,

You should not use a ribbon as a cat collar for a number of reasons. The ribbon could tear easily, or, because it does not have a safety mechanism, could get caught easily on something and not tear, putting your kitty at risk for choking or being strangled. Also, your cat could chew on the ribbon, and if he or she ingests it, the ribbon could cause an intestinal blockage.

I recommend purchasing a safety cat collar at your local pet store or online. The best cat collars have a breakaway clasp that will release the collar if your kitty gets caught on something.

Best wishes,
Dr. Neely
