Cat Heartworm Medicine

by Gail Chase

Hello Dr. Neely,

My cat Boobie is strictly an indoor cat. I have no other pets in my home. My question to you is do you think it's necessary for me to give him heartworm medicine? Boobie is middle-aged. I think he's about 5 or 6 years old. I adopted him from a cat rescue about 4 years ago.

I appreciate your advice.

Dear Gail:

This is a somewhat controversial issue and also depends on the part of country a cat lives in. In our part of the country, I do not believe it is necessary. I have never given it to my own cats and I do not recommend it to my clients.

I have seen nothing but cats all day every day for 18 years and have not seen a single case of heartworm in cats.

You will find opposing views on this subject and ultimately will probably have to decide for yourself, but that is my opinion. Thank you for writing and if you have further questions, please do not hesitate to write again.

Dr. Neely
