Strange rattle in kitten's throat after spaying

by Jenni

I have a 7 month old Persian kitten who was spayed yesterday. She is fine in herself, running round, eating and drinking. But she has a strange rattling sound coming from her throat instead of a purr.

I know the tube can irritate the throat during the operation, but would this cause this noise? She is not due to go back for a check up for another 6 days.

Any advice would be very welcome.

Thanks, Jenni

Dear Jenni,

It is certainly possible to have a slightly moist sound, change in the sound of voice, or a mild cough from the irritation of having a tube in your kitty's trachea. If she is eating, drinking, and breathing fine (be sure to observe her chest and sides to see whether it seems at all labored), then she is likely okay.

However, it would be impossible to say with certainty whether this is a concern without seeing her in person, so I would recommend that you call the veterinarian who performed the surgery and describe your concerns. Your vet may want to see her in person sooner than her scheduled follow-up.

Best wishes,
Dr. Neely
